I confess, I was a Kindle skeptic. I love reading and I love the idea of one day having my walls lined with bookshelves completely filled with every type of book. I also sometimes find myself stepping just over that line that separates "being prepared" from "being completely paranoid" and I think it would be a very very bad idea for all books, newspapers and magazines to go electronic because it is then WAY too easy for information to be controlled. So, I'm good with books. But we like to take road trips and I don't like trying to choose which books to take with me and then finding room to pack them. So, the Kindle seemed like a good idea for traveling. I could have thousands of books with me and they'd hardly take up any space at all.
Josh surprised me with a Kindle back in November right before Secora was born, and I have to admit, I love it. The book aspect is nice, of course. I can get just about any book I want in less than a minute from just about anywhere. I can "highlight" those books and make notes and then just pull up my list of notes (awfully convenient for book club, or when there's something I want to tell Josh about later). The Kindle saves my place for me (a nice feature when you have kids with a talent for pulling out bookmarks). But there are a whole slew of other neat things it does that I didn't know about before I got it.
Under the "experimental" section, there's a web browser. Now, it's far from perfect, but it does allow me to check my email or facebook. And, you can also get games to go on it. I've been playing quite a bit of Scrabble lately (one player or two player!). I also didn't know about all of the free books available. There are the classics, which are nice to have for homeschooling, but there is also a promotional section on Amazon with some newer books that are free. I just finished one that wasn't quite formatted perfectly (the font randomly changed sizes), but the content was there and it was a GREAT book, for FREE!
I haven't tried it out yet, but they've also just launched their loaning program, where you can let a friend borrow your ebook to read on their Kindle or any Kindle App for 14 days.
It's also very easy to read and the battery seems to last forever. When the battery is getting low, a message pops up suggesting you turn the wireless off and it significantly lengthens the battery life so you can keep reading until you have a chance to charge again.
I'm so glad I finally got a Kindle and it will definitely be a staple on trips from now on!
